A MESSAGE FROM EVIE SHOCKLEY:
greetings! this is just a brief but enthusiastic report on the reading
i just got home from. wow!
the glorious amy king, with her oh-so-intense-blue-eyes, kicked off the
evening as host. (let's drop that decorative "-ess" stuff, shall we?)
she brought up the first reader of the night: justin marks. justin was
teased from the audience about the "penetrating" devices in his poetry
(a word from one of the poems, thrown back at him); to his credit, he
called our attention also to its, and i quote, "multiple points of
entry" (also from his poem). : ) he gave us a straight ahead, funny
reading of mostly new work from his manuscript-seeking-a-publisher. (i
didn't catch the name of the ms., but some lucky publisher will make it
known to us all.) good stuff!
ms. amy had to dash off to a conflicting engagement, so passed the baton
(aka the MiPO tape recorder) to the dimpl-icious shanna compton. shanna
called to the stage the second reader: kate greenstreet. woo-hoo!!!
kate got herself situated with the mic and then treated us to a reading
of the whole first chapbook/section of *case sensitive.* i loved
hearing her poet-voice; the section she read was the only section
of her book i had read prior to the reading, as it happens, and it was
great to see what she did with it. she's not a consistent respecter of
her own line breaks, fyi. and if you thought some of those lines were
funny, you were right -- they are. she read amy into one of her poems
("She seems young to know so much.") and got a nearly full audience
consensus on her observation about ghosts (what they "have in common: /
they always want to tell you how they died."). we were all charmed (i
speak for everyone present).
finally, shanna lovely shanna introduced the final reader, janet holmes,
as her "hero." (yay for dropping the decorative "-ine"!!!) we all
cheered. janet read from her new book (which i was delighted to snatch
a copy of for myself, sans shipping and handling fees), called "f2f,"
which everyone who's anyone (online, that is -- not including me, before
tonight) knows stands for "face to face," as her cover illustrates. she
is a most expressive and captivating reader -- high energy and working
the multiplicity of meanings in her phrases. she's got all these great
dyads from mythology, literary history, and literary theory operating in
her poem as a kind of scaffolding / plot device: couples such as eros
and psyche, emily dickinson and her audience, eurydice and orpheus, and
"you" and "i" (the reader and the writer, so to speak). i loved her
reading (not to mention the hot little black sweater-dress she was
wearing -- yes, the 80s are back, damnit, and you'd better love it!!),
and got halfway through f2f on the way home, and i say to you "go forth
and get your copy today! and while you're at it, get your copy of case
sensitive, too! and consider yourself lucky to be living in the era of
such fine poets!" and i won't say it again.
but there you have it.

David Applegate is a library clerk. He co-founded Bad Noise Productions in early 2006. Their first production, "Headless, nameless / Death hippie dub EP," a split text in the tradition of 7" hardcore records, will be available from www.badnoiseproductions.com in the very near future. A second production, the mysterious "Grammar Crisis," will appear during the fall of 2006.
Gina Myers is originally from Saginaw, MI. She now resides in Brooklyn, NY where she co-edits the tiny with Gabriella Torres. Her chapbook Fear of the Knee Bending Backwards is forthcoming from H_NGM_N, and a chapbook of collaborations with the poet Dustin Williamson, Power Lunch, is also forthcoming.
Poet and performer, Corie Feiner (nee Herman) delivers her work with intensity, humor, and skill. Called "wonderful" by The New York Times, and "captivating," by Backstage Magazine; she has been featured in The Riverdale Press, the Greenwhich Times, and on WNBC for her extraordinary performances and poetry workshops. In addition to being a cast member of the renowned theatre troupe, Storahtelling she is the author of the poetry collection, Radishes into Roses, and has been published in numerous literary magazines and anthologies. Erica Kaufman co-curates the belladonna* reading series/small press and is the author of the chapbooks: from the two coat syndrome, the kickboxer suite, and a familiar album (winner of the 2003 New School Chapbook Contest). Her poems have appeared in or are forthcoming in Puppy Flowers, Bombay Gin, The Mississippi Review, Jubilat, Good Foot, CARVE, and elsewhere.
Geof Huth is a writer of textual and visual poetry. He writes frequently about visual poetry, especially on his weblog, dbqp: visualizing poetics . His chapbooks include Analphabet, The Dreams of the Fishwife, ghostlight, Peristyle, To a Small Stream of Water (or Ditch) , and wreadings. Huth recently edited &2: an/thology of pwoermds, the first-ever anthology of one-word poems. His most recent book was a box of pages entitled water vapour. Next up is the chapbook Out of Water from Paper Kite Press.
Nico Vassilakis lives in Seattle where he is a member of SubText. A father of one Radio. And working on a play about Morton Feldman to be presented in August. Recent chapbooks include Askew (bcc press), The Amputation of L Mendax (Writers Forum), & SPIECES PIECES (gong press). His concrete/visual poetry can be found electronically sprinkled on internet.
Scott Glassman lives in South Jersey and works in the medical testing field. He is the author of the forthcoming chapbook Exertions (Cy Gist, 2006), and Surface Tension (Dusie Kollektiv, 2006) with Mackenzie Carignan. His poems have appeared in OCHO, Epicenter, CutBank, Coconut, eratio, and others. He also co-curates the INVERSE Reading Series in Philadelphia.
Sara Femenella has just returned to Brooklyn after six months studying and writing in St. Petersburg, Russia. She is starting Columbia University in the fall as a MFA candidate in poetry.
Meghan Punschke resides in New York City and is currently attending the New School for an MFA in Poetry. She is the host and curator of "Word of Mouth," a reading series in the West Village dedicated to poets and fiction writers. This September, she will be hosting the first poetry event to be included in the Harlem Arts Festival. Punschke's work has also appeared in Free Focus.
Brian Howe is a freelance writer and poet living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is a contributing writer at Pitchforkmedia.com and a contributing editor at Paste Magazine. Howe's poems have appeared in MiPo, Octopus, Fascicle, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Eratio, Soft Targets, and Cannibal. His chapbook Guitar Smash is forthcoming from Atlanta's 3rdness press. Jenny Boully's The Body was published in 2002 by Slope Editions. It is currently being translated for publication in Iran. Her chapbook "of the mismatched teacups, of the single-serving spoon" is forthcoming in April from the Coconut Chapbook Series. Another chapbook, "[one love affair]" is forthcoming from Tarpaulin Sky Paper Goods later this year. She has a new manuscript, The Book of Beginnings & Endings & Other Such Things, and is putting finishing touches on a memoir. She has just completed coursework in the Ph.D. program in English at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Born in Thailand and reared in Texas, she has studied at Hollins Univeristy and the University of Notre Dame.
Aaron Belz lives in St. Louis, where he curates Readings @ The Schlafly Tap Room and teaches English at SLU. His work has been published recently in Knock, Court Green, The Bedside Guide to No Tell Motel, McSweeney's, and Boston Review, and will soon appear in Painted Bride Quarterly and Unpleasant Events Schedule. Reb Livingston is the co-editor of No Tell Motel and the anthology THE BEDSIDE GUIDE TO NO TELL MOTEL. She is the author of two chapbooks, PTERODACTYLS SOAR AGAIN (Whole Coconut) and WANTON TEXTILES (No Tell Books), a collaboration with Ravi Shankar. Her poems have appeared in Best American Poetry 2006, Coconut, MiPOesias and other publications.
Bruce Covey teaches at Emory University and is the author of The Greek Gods as Telephone Wires and the forthcoming Ten Pins, Ten Frames (Front Room Publishers, March) and Elapsing Speedway Organism (No Tell Books, Fall 2006). His recent poems also appear or are forthcoming in The Hat, Bombay Gin, Explosive Magazine, LIT, Boog City, One Less, 580 Split, Small Town, and other journals. He edits the web-based poetry magazine Coconut and curates the What’s New in Poetry reading series in Atlanta.

Janet Holmes is author of F2F (due from U of Notre Dame Press in October), Humanophone, The Green Tuxedo, and The Physicist at the Mall. She directs (edits, designs, typesets, and otherwise runs) Ahsahta Press, an all-poetry press at Boise State University. She also teaches in the MFA program there.
Justin Marks has poems in recent issues of The Literary Review, Typo, Word For/ Word, Black Warrior Review and Coconut, and forthcoming from Fulcrum, H_NGM_N, and the Outside Voices 2008 Anthology of Younger Poets. His chapbook, You Being You by Proxy, is out on Kitchen Press. His full length manuscript,Twenty Five Hours in Iceland and Other Poems, was a finalist for the 2006 May Swenson Poetry Award. He is Editor of LIT magazine and lives in New York City.
